Plain-language summary
The 2015 core carries over: people doing work under your control must be aware of the quality policy, the objectives relevant to them, their own contribution, and what it means when requirements are not followed. The 2026 edition extends awareness to the quality-culture and ethical-behaviour expectations now placed on leadership in 5.1.1 — so the culture thread runs through the whole workforce, not just the top table. Leadership promising an open, ethical quality culture that the shop floor has never heard of is exactly the gap this closes.
What the clause is really asking
Whether the culture expectations are communicated in terms people can repeat in their own words: what the organisation expects when quality and speed collide, how to raise a concern (and that it is safe to), and what ethical behaviour means in this workplace — records honest, problems reported, no quiet passing of suspect product.
What auditors look for
Awareness is tested where it lives — in interviews at workstations. Alongside the classic four questions, expect: what happens here when someone finds a defect late in the shift? Would you report a mistake you made? Who do you tell if you are asked to do something that feels wrong? Answers are compared across levels and against leadership's claims under 5.1.1 — divergence is the finding.
Typical evidence
Induction and refresher material covering culture and conduct expectations in plain language; toolbox-talk or briefing records on speak-up and quality-first expectations; consistent interview answers across shifts and levels.
How to comply — recommendations
Fold culture into the awareness you already deliver: one induction slide on 'how we behave when quality is at stake', a periodic toolbox talk on speaking up, and visible reinforcement when someone does stop the line or report an error. Awareness is demonstrated in answers, not signatures — brief people on the reality, then make sure the reality is defensible.
Common nonconformities
Workforce unaware of culture/ethics expectations leadership claims to promote; awareness 'evidenced' only by a signed induction register; interview answers revealing fear of reporting problems.
