Annex A — Clarification of structure, terminology and clauses

Plain-language summary
ISO 9001:2015 already had a short informative Annex A on its structure and terminology, and an Annex B listing the other ISO/TC 176 standards. The published 2026 edition replaces both with one much larger informative Annex A: word-level clarifications (A.2), a note on applicability (A.3), and then a section for every clause from 4 to 10 explaining intent, each pointing to the ISO 10000-series guidance standards where they exist. It adds no requirements — the text says so — and there are no worked examples. You cannot receive a finding 'against Annex A', but it will shape how certification auditors read the requirements they do audit against, which makes it the highest-leverage reading in the new edition.
What the clause is really asking
Nothing, formally — it is informative and says it adds nothing. Practically, it asks you to read it once, note where its clarification of a word or a clause differs from how your system reads it, and use it to pre-empt interpretation debates at audit.
What auditors look for
Auditors cannot cite Annex A as a requirement, but they will arrive with its interpretations in their heads — particularly on the revision's new ground: what 'promoting quality culture' reasonably looks like, how far the climate consideration extends, what distinct opportunity management means in practice. Knowing the annex lets you meet those interpretations on equal footing, or argue yours coherently where you differ.
Typical evidence
None required. Sensible practice: a one-page internal note of the annex points relevant to your context, used when briefing internal auditors and preparing for the transition audit.
How to comply — recommendations
Read Annex A when the standard publishes — before your transition audit, not after. Update internal-auditor training with the interpretations that touch your weak spots. Where your practice deviates from an annex suggestion, decide consciously whether to align or to be ready to justify the difference.
Common nonconformities
None directly — the risk is indirect: turning up at a transition audit interpreting the new requirements more narrowly than the annex does, and losing every benefit-of-the-doubt discussion.
